You know it's perfect when old people say you can't do it.
I had heard that story before. It was told in Sweden to many times just when Spotify was making its appearance. And it was told by old farts. And we all know the crisis was solved by Spotify in Sweden later on.
Same here in Japan. The guy said that the sales where down but the digital streaming was staying at the same small rate. The thing is what he is saying is that people stopped listening to music. That is a fact that never is true. People listen to more music then ever. The error here is that the old fart really don't understand where they ate listening or where they find new music.
So I asked where kids where hanging online. I had a hard time seeing that kids in Japan not using Internet.
Fast, he answered that kids loved to be on YouTube and see videos.
Voila, bingo there you have it. The streaming is up but they haven't checked the right sources. Yes Japanese kids won't use Spotify and stuff like that. No they are on YouTube and watch videos, witch is also streaming and you can earn money on.
What I knew that he didn't was a that I had meet some younger Japanese people that explained how the new generation behaved. And they had number of exploding of use of streams.
It's never the case that people stop listening to music. But it's always what you hear from some old farts in the industry. How influencial they might have been they are out. And that is good news for you. When this happens there is niche to get into and pick shares. The golden age is when to old fart whine.

What we need is a…
Then you ask why do you need that? Then you get the story that they need the booker to book more gigs, the record label to get the music spread more and the manger to get them the first two.
If the mountain won't come to Muhammad then Muhammad must go to the mountain said Francis Bacon. And here it’s real. Often they complain that these people are hard to reach. I just know how visible they are when an artist is in the hot air. So the problem is they are not in the hot air.
In many ways this hunt for these people takes more time than doing the things that actually get these people’s attention. Because the record label needs a good product and a good ground to their job. It’s not that they just can take anything and make it gold (in our mix console it said: You can’t make gold out of cowshit). The booking agency needs a demand to start book, it’s almost impossible without a good story or a demand to get gigs.
Yes I know during the happy 80:s these was the companies that could pay money to get that ground done. That was possible that the gates back then was very few and very clear. Today the market is much, much more complex and it can’t be done that way anymore.
And my opinion is more that is the lazy artists that tends to ask these questions. Yes it won’t be easy to book gigs, and it would not be easier for a booking agency. And spread the music is really the artist problem in the new market and can’t be easy done for a record label if the artist hasn’t done their homework. And push over this problem to a manger is just plain stupid, it won’t be easier for a manager to find these people if the product doesn’t fit the criteria.

What is the next level?
One was: This email comes in almost daily. Always annoy's me.
"I am looking to take my music to the next level". Where is that exactly?
Same with me, I just hate when artists use that line. We are ready to go to the next level. If I got a dollar for every time I hear that I would be rich.
No there is no “next level”. The level rises in the way you work. There are no magical shortcuts or magical formulas. It’s all about your work.
And don’t measure that in levels. I have had many bands telling me that they won’t take smaller gigs just because they are not on that level. The worst ones has told me that they don’t do showcases if they are not guaranteed as much people the draw in their hometown.
These are the ones that never make it. And the line “next level” is just making you look like a amateur. So what to say? I’m looking for opportunity’s is the more correct team. Or I want to get a bigger more experienced team. That is more professional.
We know what you mean, we just hate the term.

A catch 22 for artists.
All you had to do is the register and get as many as possible to vote for you on their homepage.
*Sigh*
The one with the biggest fanbase will win this. But if you already have that kind of fanbase you really don’t need to be exposed to the industry professionals. Most of them will do a far worse job that you already has done. The one that needs these industry people is the smaller ones, tat are good, but they don’t stand a chance.
Of course they might cheat and just let someone that they like musically win. Then it’s cheating, so there is no point then to get on with this.
It’s like a catch 22, if you already have the audience you don’t need this opportunity. If you need it well then you don’t have that massive audience to vote for you. The winner of course is the festival that gets your fans data.
Most of things like this when it’s you have to chase your fans like this sucks. Most for the fans, what is the point for them to get you a vote and lose their data? Every time I have seen it the band that wins these competitions really sucks. I don’t know where they get their audience but usually it’s some strange country where they music is not that good from the beginning. Witch ends up that the industry people just stands in front of the stage don’t know a shit what to do. The figures are really good but the music sucks. And of course this end up in the blog entry I did a time ago
Next Phase is much harder.
http://ihuvudetpaenar.blogspot.se/2017/02/next-phase-is-much-harder.html
Spotify is dead
http://ihuvudetpaenar.blogspot.se/2017/03/spotify-is-dead.html
Usually also the artists that are good are already picked up long before they reach these numbers. The ones still having the numbers and an urge to be in front of professionals usually has some really big error somewhere.
So the artist will harass their audience, the festival get a crappy band, the industry will waste time. Good work. and don't forget that you can pay people to vote for you.

Imaginary walls
No there is not a difference in styles. The only thing that difference is that certain styles is hi-jacked by people that don’t see the difference between crap and art.
The rules are the same even if you play jazz, chewing gum pop, punk or even art music. Its back to that you have to create something that people wants to listen to, instead of thinking that you create something special that no one understands.
Yes you can spread Jazz in social media and yes you can get fans there. There nothing that says that jazz needs to be given out on vinyl and their listeners demand vinyl so the government has to support their art. That is just bullshit.
This is the rules for everyone, even the people that start business.
1. You have to create something that is demand for, and in the beginning there might be no demand, but can be created.
2. You have to be where people are. Marketing is a must, it never happens magically.
If you play music that can’t be promoted, well that is a very good sign it’s crap, change your music.
Most of the time it’s promotable and not crap is just that the artist choose that way. Don’t stop yourself just because your idol sets for small audience.
Usually when I go to meetings where the more odd styles gather what strikes me is that they are so unprofessional, and that is usually the error, not the music. When you talk to people that play folk music they all want to go to Folk Alliance (big fair in USA for folk music). Sure why not, still the people that are on Folk alliance is very limited. None of the bigger players is there. Even if you just started you make a wall and put Folk Alliance as the top. You should go for the mainstream ones like Canadian music week, SXSW, Musexpo, Live at Heart. Yes t will be harder competition but that is need for you to get out in the big market. If you set your top to the guy that has his record label under his bed, or the girl that has some strange festival for 150 bearded fruitarians you limit yourself. Sure you should take these as well but still adopt to get a bigger audience.
Why can’t a folk band be in Eurovison song contest, yes they can! Yes of course they will get shit form all the other crap musicians in that genre that tells you that you are a sell out or something. Do you know what, most of these people choose this style since they are afraid of success or actually not talent enough to make it! Still if you did it you will be different and very celebrated to have done it.

You don’t put songwriter to build a bridge!
It seems like people just don’t take it seriously. These songwriters have taken years and years of training. Also many of them have gone on a 2 to 3 year education on schools like Musikmakarna. And in most cases they would never try to apply for a job on a construction firm to be an engineer without skills.
But here I get hell of a lot of people (engineers also)thinking that shuffle around a song is an easy task. Actually there are a lot of things that has to be thought through. So when I get songs from untrained people they usually already from the beginning contains structural errors. And usually they are not that updated on the styles (read they send me Eurodisco from 97).
The climate today is so hard. It’s not like when Max Martin started, back then there was just take whatever you had. Today you are against very skilled and updated songwriters that really work hard to get into the market. So for me I feel I just got a staff that knows what they are talking about and deliver in high speed what I need.
So if you feel that you have what it takes, quit your day job, get to school and then start to send to our teams. This is a highly skilled profession.

We can fix everything!
You can recognize this by that they always can promise you everything as long as you have the fan base to bring in. If you had the fan base, well then you really don’t need their services. A good reason why they almost never have any active bigger artists that is active on their sites.
I have never seen any of these companies actually can get you a bigger fan base. They can provide everything else like companies that can sponsor you if you have the fan base or other services as long as you can control the people.
I guess the golden age is over for them now. Still there is too many of them out there.
The future is not going in these companies; instead have small team that actually cares about you.

It's not hard to release music!
I was on a talent competition a couple of years ago (read in the age of CD). We were hanging in the green room since I was part of the jury. In this jury was also an artist who has done quite much do it yourself releases. And the artist said:
- It’s really complicated to give out a record. All these forms from NCB (mechanical rights) and how the layout measurements and all you have to know.
- No it’s darn simple to give out music, the other guy in the jury said. You are just lazy not putting yourself into something that is written on the homepage quite easy.
And the room went silent. But it’s true. It’s not at all complicated to give out music. Sure one or two forms with the PRO and some info for uploading (and back then some measurements for the cover). And today it’s even easier to get things out.
Still that same question comes over and over again; it’s so hard to give out your music. And then the person only thinks about the recording process and filling out the formula at the digital distributor (which is usually very simplified if they go to an armature distributor, they should see the forms on the real ones).
If you think this part is hard and consume time, you should not give out music. Don’t release music if that is the case. Actually nowadays there is more information what to do than ever. And it’s not hard to understand or get a tutorial of. No it’s because that you are in the part that person in the jury talked about, lazy.
I usually check out with bands telling me that it’s hard how many internet courses they have paid for to find out how to market the product. Usually it’s zero money; occasionally they might have spent a small sum on something. Then I ask how much they spent on gear. Well that is usually ridiculous high and sometimes they have also spent a large sum of money in the studio and spent much money on a producer. And don’t get me going how much they paid for the damn video. But marketing, no.
It’s really not complicated. It’s just that you don’t want to pay for what you need.

Old people and labels.
But that is usually what I look for when I pick the team around an artist. People that talks about finding other people to do the job, or worse just talk like the job is done when you are signed to a record label. Then they are not for me. I’m looking for people that actually talks about that they can do something concrete for the artist.
It’s frustrating to have these older industry people around. Since they give artist a hell of lot of false information. They are so disillusioned about the record deal like a 5 year old and Santa Clause. Yes it is like annoying that you would have a friend that is 50 years old and for real believe in Santa. First it might be cute, second you really start to worry about their mental health.

Keep one project.
Still so many times you see them post more in social media about their other jobs. The other jobs can be that they are touring musicians with other bands, dancer or actors. But even just a plain job as teacher or their hobby.
You work yourself to death to release their single, video, album whatever still when you ask what they do it’s mainly, well I have so much to do with my other work. Then you really know they are only releasing for a hobby. Someone that is interesting in something goes back to it all the time.
It’s like my pinball. I love my pinball and I really would like to have more pinball games. But to be honest if the pinball crash and I have to fix it. It can stand still quite a long time before I take me sorry ass to solder that error in the game. Yes it’s fun but not my priority.
I guess around 90% of the artist is not in that priority zone. But it’s hard to see who is really dedicated until you have worked with them for a while. Usually it’s the bands that you don’t hear so much from. They are more waiting that you should call and tell all the hard work you have put down, so they can say no to 50% of it since they don’t have the time.
In Metallica they forbid their members to have side projects. Queen survived on that all members had side projects. I don’t know what is right. You lose interest of something if they don’t get back with their part of the work.

You must get the music right.
I just saw one of these things. A band sent me an invitation to a festival I’m visiting to see their show. Very nice letter, okey you can easy see that they send it to every one of the industry people for the festival. Still that is okey (even though it was kind of odd writing to work with us since we only work internationally and the band sings in Swedish).
All the links was there, their homepage look awesome. They have released 3 albums in their existing five years. Has done some interesting shows on a lower level.
So they have done all the other stuff right but when it comes to the music the homework was not done. And then all the other stuff won’t matter. Over 5 years and 3 albums they had 29 followers on Spotify. About 2000 listening and 56 followers. That says it all, the music sucks. Over that time you have to think about that maybe the error is somewhere in the music.

It could have been worse...
Yes I said that eurovision song contest in Sweden was like take a dump and then whipe your ass with the shit. Well I just realized that if Anna Book was in, it also ment to eat that shit afterwards. And if there was a song written by author that writes really bad crime fiction (hello Camilla Smäckberg) then you had to put that shit back in all your body openings. So yeah it could have been much worse.
My next wonder if the Swedish musicians union will go on strike on Eurovision like the threat to do on idol. I mean this is as bad killing dreams of young musicians as the idol. Or even worse in idol they get flogged afterwards. Here they get flogged before, during and after.
Well eurovision will run more seasons so I guess the union really don't dare to get into that conflict.

It’s like taken the shit you just shit and wipe you ass with it!
And every year they fail miserably.
They seem to go full in to find this artist that a local opening of a shopping center never will use. Or dig up old Idol artists that are not good enough. It’s all the opposite against what they talk about the rest of the year.
Even the Swedish presenters are like the worst of the worst. They take old farts of artists that have been in the completion to present the new shit. It’s like taken the shit you just shit and wipe you ass with it. This is the artist that are worse the Michel Bublé and only comes out on Christmas because you need to be so shit wasted to even hear them sing.
They take in the big failures like The Foo Conspiracy. This is a Swedish boyband. Yes you have never heard of it if you are outside Sweden. To be honest I never heard a song from them. Still they had a lot of small girls following them a couple of years ago. And now they make a last attempt (with one member short) in Eurovision. Tragic!
They take out Charlotte Perelli, who won the whole shit a couple a years ago. Since she only has worked with opening shopping mall since then. I guess she needs to be in the limelight for a bit. Same with the dreadful artist Loreen that won with Euphoria couple years ago. She is barely opening up shopping malls today.
Where have they dug up Roger Pontare? This is as bad as putting out a new single with Vanilla Ice.
Then you have the artists that are on every year, Ace Wilder, Lisa Ajax, Mariette. Failed artists that now just have to do Eurovision. Now also joining the parade is Jasmine Kara who really is the most failed artist ever. Of course they also have taken in artists that people listens to but is ashamed to listen to like De vet du.
The of course the artist they take in just so they can say that they have diversity. The hardrock band Dissmissed. Every hard rock band that has been on is just not taken seriously. Maybe they can no play on Sweden Rock since it was bought by Live Nation and they will probably destroy the lineup with bands like The Poodles. Sabaton Open Air is heading the same way, so maybe they can play there as well in front of the taco tent.
In this section is Les Gordons that we publish some songs of. They are put there just to be fill out with their rock’n’roll. Unfortunally my guess is that they won’t go further in their group. I’m surprised if they go to the second chance. In reality there is no backup on them and they are more in as a reason to tell the people that yes we have all genres, not excluding anyone. But all press goes on all old Idols stars and other stuff they just drown in the 10 other artist that universal will put money on.
A jojking same who is from South America. Yes Eurovision is like a freak show. And to top that you get Owe Thörnqvist, now we have a frak show a big freak show!
Värsta skandalen är schlagerfinalen där menlösa får visas upp varje år......

What pisses me off.
What really pisses me off is people that is very meticulous with their own things, but don't give a shit about others.
Like an artist that work for copyright issues for the union but when he put out music he used pirated bar codes to save money. Yes you should pay for his music but the person that maintain the bar code system you can just fuck over.
Or when an artist gives out covers but don't care to get all the info around the writers or publishers and just write stuff that is very hard to track. But are very concern to get out that dollar that came in through Spotify and make a hell of a scene to get it.
They are just about me, myself and I in their brain. And they usually market themselves as fair.
